SPAIN
Spain is one of the world’s most historic and diverse wine-producing countries, with a winemaking tradition that dates back over 2,000 years. From the cool Atlantic-influenced vineyards of Galicia to the warm Mediterranean landscapes of Catalonia and Valencia, Spain offers an extraordinary range of terroirs and wine styles.
The country is home to many internationally renowned wine regions including Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, Rías Baixas, Penedès and Jerez. Spain’s varied climates—ranging from cool coastal zones to high-altitude inland plateaus—allow winemakers to produce both powerful reds and vibrant aromatic whites.
Spain’s most important grape varieties include Tempranillo, the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero; Garnacha (Grenache), widely planted across many regions; Albariño, famous in Rías Baixas for crisp aromatic whites; and Verdejo, known for fresh and expressive wines from Rueda.
Spanish wines are often classified under the Denominación de Origen (DO) system, with top regions such as Rioja DOCa and Priorat DOCa recognised for producing some of the country’s finest wines.
Today Spain is celebrated for wines that combine rich history, regional diversity and outstanding value, making it one of the most important wine-producing nations in the world.
