The 2021 Fontodi Chianti Classico is one of the benchmark wines of Tuscany and a superb expression of Sangiovese from the celebrated Conca d’Oro vineyard amphitheatre in Panzano. Produced by Giovanni Manetti and the Fontodi team, the estate is widely regarded as one of the leading names in Chianti Classico, farming organically and focusing on purity, terroir expression and traditional Tuscan character. The 2021 vintage has been hailed by critics as one of the greatest young vintages ever seen in Chianti Classico, combining concentration, freshness and remarkable balance.
The nose is intensely expressive, offering aromas of black cherry, blackberry and wild raspberry layered with violet, dried herbs, liquorice, coffee bean and earthy Tuscan spice. The wine captures both the power of the vintage and the elegance that has become a hallmark of modern Fontodi.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with vibrant acidity, fine gravelly tannins and exceptional energy. Dark cherry, blackberry, mocha and savoury herb notes are framed by refined structure and mineral tension. Despite its concentration, the wine remains fresh and beautifully balanced, with a long finish carrying notes of spice, wild rosemary and crushed stone.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the finest value wines in serious Italian wine. Compared to Brunello di Montalcino, it is more approachable and energetic in its youth; compared to many modern Super Tuscans, it offers greater transparency and a purer expression of Sangiovese. The 2021 vintage is exceptional, delivering both immediate appeal and outstanding ageing potential. Fontodi continues to set the benchmark for classic Chianti Classico, and this wine perfectly showcases why the region is enjoying a modern renaissance. Drink from 2025 onwards or cellar comfortably for 10–20+ years. Perfect with bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-cooked ragù, grilled lamb, game dishes and aged Pecorino.
