2023 Mader Pinot Gris
- Description
- Info
The 2023 Domaine Mader Pinot Gris is a beautifully textured and precise Alsace white from one of the region’s most respected small organic producers. Based in the picturesque village of Hunawihr, Domaine Mader has built a strong reputation for producing terroir-driven wines with remarkable purity, freshness and balance. The fruit comes from 38-year-old vines planted on deep clay soils with limestone influence, a combination that gives the wine both richness and mineral structure.
The nose is expressive and layered, showing smoky peach, ripe apple and exotic tropical fruit alongside subtle floral lift and gentle spice. Compared to many heavier Pinot Gris wines, the aromatic profile remains focused and refined, with freshness and vineyard character taking centre stage. The 2023 vintage is particularly notable for being one of the driest expressions of Pinot Gris ever produced at the estate while still retaining the variety’s signature generosity and texture.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a round, supple texture balanced by vibrant acidity and impressive precision. Orchard fruit, peach and citrus notes are supported by subtle lees complexity and a delicate mineral backbone, leading to a long, harmonious finish. Around 25% of the wine was aged on fine lees in neutral oak while the remainder matured in stainless steel, helping to preserve freshness while adding depth and texture. A small amount of residual sugar (around 3.6g/L) gives the wine extra breadth without compromising its dry, gastronomic style.
Domaine Mader’s commitment to organic viticulture, hand harvesting and low yields contributes to the wine’s clarity and terroir transparency. Jérôme Mader has become one of the most exciting young growers in Alsace, consistently producing wines that combine classic regional character with modern precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the best-value serious Pinot Gris wines in the portfolio. Compared to Italian Pinot Grigio, it’s richer, more textural and significantly more complex; compared to many richer Alsace Pinot Gris styles, it remains fresher, drier and more mineral-driven. The 2023 vintage is especially attractive because it combines ripe fruit generosity with remarkable freshness and precision. This is a versatile food wine that already drinks beautifully but has enough structure to evolve gracefully over the medium term. Drink now or cellar comfortably for 5–10+ years. Perfect with roast chicken, pork dishes, shellfish, mushroom dishes, soft cheeses or refined Asian cuisine.
