The 2018 Blain-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets Premier Cru is a refined 100% Chardonnay from Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, combining the concentration of older vines with the elegance of this limestone-rich vineyard. Domaine Blain-Gagnard was established in 1980 when Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine Gagnard, daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. Situated above Les Champs Gain, Caillerets takes its name from its stony, calcareous soils, which help explain the wine’s distinctive mineral character. The domaine’s vines were planted between 1954 and 1987, providing an established vineyard base for this expressive Premier Cru.
The 2018 offers yellow apple, white peach, subtle vanilla and toast, supported by firm acidity and layered minerality. Jasper Morris MW awarded the wine 92 Points, highlighting its classy aromatics, pronounced stony character and attractive saline finish. His assessment suggests that the vineyard’s mineral identity remains clearly apparent despite the generosity of the vintage. Bill Nanson of Burgundy Report also noted smoky minerality, a mouth-filling texture and gradually unfolding complexity, with impressive length. This is a Chardonnay that brings together fruit depth, texture and the precision that makes Caillerets particularly appealing.
Ben’s Recommendation:
What makes this bottle interesting today is its combination of Premier Cru pedigree and around eight years of development. A well-stored example should now offer an opportunity to explore how Caillerets evolves beyond its youthful apple and peach flavours, potentially developing hazelnut, toast and more savoury complexity while retaining its mineral backbone. I would drink it now through approximately 2029–2031, with storage history guiding how much longer to keep it. Allow it to unfold gradually in a large Burgundy glass rather than judging it immediately after opening. Scallops, roast chicken, richer fish dishes or mushrooms in a light cream sauce would be excellent partners. For someone looking for white Burgundy with bottle age, texture and a clearly defined vineyard character, this is a particularly attractive choice.
