The 2021 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is a beautifully precise expression of one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards. Domaine de Montille owns a 0.52-hectare parcel positioned in the heart of Les Folatières at mid-slope, directly between parcels belonging to Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Leroy. The soils are approximately equal parts limestone and clay, and the domaine considers Folatières alongside Les Pucelles and Le Cailleret as one of the three greatest Premier Cru terroirs of Puligny-Montrachet. Organic since 1995 and biodynamic since 2005, the domaine’s farming and restrained winemaking place particular emphasis on purity, freshness and mineral expression.
The cool 2021 vintage produced a particularly classical style, with severe spring frost dramatically reducing Chardonnay yields but leaving wines of exceptional freshness and tension. The 2021 Folatières opens with white peach, pear and apricot alongside chamomile, cool citrus, flint and subtle exotic spice. The palate is concentrated yet finely chiselled, with vibrant acidity and pronounced limestone minerality carrying through a bone-dry, persistent finish. Production was extremely limited at just 1,560 bottles, with 30% new oak reported for this vintage. Critical reception was excellent, including 93 Points from Allen Meadows at Burghound and 91–94 Points from Jasper Morris MW.
