- Info
The 2022 Henschke Henry’s Seven GSM is a vibrant and beautifully balanced Rhône-inspired blend that pays tribute to Henry Evans, who planted the first seven-acre vineyard at Keyneton in 1853. Produced by Henschke, this iconic Barossa blend combines Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and a touch of Viognier, reflecting both the historic varieties of the region and the family’s long-standing commitment to quality and sustainability. The 2022 vintage delivered excellent fruit purity and balance, resulting in a wine that is approachable in its youth while retaining the structure to develop further complexity. The blend comprised approximately 72% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 11% Mataro and 2% Viognier, with the Viognier co-fermented alongside the Shiraz.
The nose is bright and expressive, revealing aromas of blackberry, plum and black cherry layered with violet, lavender and exotic spice. Notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf and subtle mocha emerge with aeration, while hints of cracked pepper, licorice and earthy complexity add further depth. The small addition of Viognier contributes a fragrant floral lift and enhances the wine’s aromatic intensity, creating a profile that is both inviting and distinctly Barossan.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and impressive balance. Layers of dark berries, plum and black cherry are supported by notes of spice, dried herbs and subtle savoury complexity. The Shiraz provides depth and structure, Grenache contributes brightness and red-fruited charm, while Mataro adds texture and earthy character. The wine is smooth and seamless, with fine-grained tannins carrying the fruit through a long, fresh and harmonious finish marked by lingering notes of dark fruits, spice and Mediterranean herbs.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of Australia’s benchmark GSM blends and an outstanding choice for customers who enjoy Rhône-style reds with freshness, versatility and character. Compared to richer, heavily oak-driven Shiraz wines, the 2022 Henry’s Seven offers greater vibrancy, savoury complexity and food-friendly appeal while still delivering impressive fruit concentration. The 2022 vintage is particularly attractive for its balance between generosity and elegance, making it equally suited to casual entertaining and serious dining. Drink now or cellar comfortably over the next 8–10 years. Perfect with roast lamb, grilled sausages, Mediterranean cuisine, charcuterie, slow-cooked meats, wood-fired pizza or barbecue dishes.
