The 2022 S.C. Pannell Smart Grenache is a remarkable single-vineyard Grenache sourced from the historic Smart Vineyard in Clarendon, one of the highest and oldest Grenache sites in McLaren Vale. Planted to dry-grown bush vines on ancient siltstone soils, this vineyard consistently produces Grenache with exceptional perfume, structure and longevity. The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of raspberry, red cherry and rhubarb alongside notes of rose petal, red liquorice, spice and subtle earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet powerful, combining vibrant red fruit with remarkable texture and precision. Flavours of sour cherry, cranberry and wild raspberry are framed by fine, persistent tannins and bright natural acidity. A portion of whole-bunch fermentation adds savoury complexity and lift, while the ancient Clarendon soils contribute a distinctive mineral character. The finish is long, structured and beautifully detailed, with layers of red fruit, spice and floral notes unfolding gradually.
Ben’s Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding Grenache for customers who appreciate site-driven wines with depth, finesse and serious ageing potential. Its combination of vibrant fruit, savoury complexity and refined tannin structure makes it a superb match for roast lamb, duck, chargrilled vegetables and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. While already impressive with decanting, this wine is built for the cellar and is expected to evolve beautifully over the next 15–20 years.
