POGGIO AL TUFO
Poggio al Tufo is a Tuscan estate owned by the historic Tommasi family, renowned for their long winemaking tradition in Valpolicella. Drawn by the untapped potential of southern Tuscany, the Tommasis established Poggio al Tufo in the early 1990s, planting roots in the Maremma, a coastal zone celebrated for its sun-drenched hills, volcanic soils, and Mediterranean breezes.
The estate encompasses over 60 hectares of vineyards, primarily set on soils rich in tufo (volcanic tuff), which gives the winery its name. These soils, combined with the mild coastal climate, provide ideal conditions for both international and native grape varieties, resulting in wines with richness, freshness, and balance.
Poggio al Tufo focuses on both Tuscan classics and expressive blends. The Rompicollo—a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon—has become the estate’s flagship wine, known for its ripe fruit, silky texture, and easy elegance. Other highlights include Alicante, Vermentino, and Morellino di Scansano, each reflecting the character of Maremma while carrying the hallmark precision of the Tommasi family style.
With Poggio al Tufo, the Tommasis have extended their philosophy of respect for terroir beyond Valpolicella, bringing their commitment to quality, sustainability, and authenticity to one of Tuscany’s most exciting wine frontiers. The result is a portfolio of wines that are approachable, food-friendly, and true to both place and heritage.
