The 2022 Place of Changing Winds Harcourt Syrah (1500ml) is a highly refined, cool-climate Syrah from Victoria’s Bendigo G.I., sourced from a specific granite-rich site on the slopes of Mt Alexander. Crafted by Rob Walters, this wine reflects a meticulous, site-driven philosophy, combining whole-bunch fermentation and extended maturation in large-format Stockinger oak to emphasize perfume, structure and finesse over weight. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, revealing violets, dark plum and black cherry alongside cracked pepper, baking spices and subtle licorice. There is a strong mineral thread, with stony, granite-driven notes and a savoury edge that adds depth and intrigue.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully composed structure. Red and dark fruit flavours - cranberry, cherry and blackberry - are supported by fine, talc-like tannins and bright acidity. The wine shows both concentration and elegance, with spice, herbal and mineral nuances creating a detailed, linear profile. The finish is long, savoury and persistent, highlighting its balance and precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the most exciting modern Australian Syrah expressions - combining Rhône-like perfume and structure with distinctly Australian purity of fruit. Compared to richer, heavier Shiraz styles, it offers far more finesse, spice and mineral tension. The magnum format (1500ml) is particularly compelling, allowing for slower ageing and greater complexity over time. Best enjoyed with decanting if drinking young, or cellar through 2038+ (and potentially longer). Exceptional with lamb, game meats or earthy, savoury dishes.
