The 2023 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is an exceptional Pinot Noir from the renowned Les Caillerets Premier Cru vineyard in Volnay, Burgundy. Often regarded as one of Volnay's finest sites, this steep mid-slope vineyard produces wines of remarkable finesse and longevity. Benjamin Leroux sources fruit from old Pinot Fin vines in the prized Caillerets-Dessus section, with around 80% whole-bunch fermentation and maturation in approximately 25% new French oak, resulting in a wine of purity, fragrance and precision. The nose reveals aromas of red cherry, raspberry and peony, layered with subtle spice, crushed stone and delicate floral notes.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and outstanding mineral tension. Flavours of wild red berries, rose petals and savoury spice unfold across a long, elegant finish, supported by fine structure and remarkable balance. The combination of old vines, whole-bunch fermentation and the celebrated Caillerets terroir gives this Premier Cru both immediate charm and exceptional ageing potential.
Ben's Recommendation: At Wine More Cellars, this is an outstanding choice for Burgundy collectors and lovers of elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir. Pair it with roast duck, quail, mushroom risotto, veal or aged Comté. While approachable after careful decanting, it is best enjoyed from 2029 onwards and will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 15–20 years.
