The 2019 Bergström Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir Magnum (1500ml) is one of Oregon’s benchmark Pinot Noirs and a superb large-format expression from one of the Willamette Valley’s most celebrated estates. Produced by Bergström Wines, the Cumberland Reserve is a carefully selected blend of the finest barrels from the estate’s five biodynamically farmed vineyards, including Silice, Bergström, Winery Block, Gregory Ranch and Le Pré du Col. Named after Cumberland Road, where the Bergström family grew up in Portland, this cuvée represents the house style—pure, mineral-driven and elegant Oregon Pinot Noir. The outstanding 2019 vintage received 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 93 points from Wine Spectator and 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, while the 1500ml magnum format provides even greater ageing potential and slower, more graceful evolution.

The nose is wonderfully expressive and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of bright Hood strawberries, black raspberry and Bing cherry intertwined with violet, dried rose petals and sweet baking spices. As the wine opens, notes of thyme, lavender and sweet tarragon emerge, complemented by hints of forest floor, ironstone and subtle maritime salinity. The aromatic profile is vibrant and energetic, balancing pristine red fruit with savoury complexity and the volcanic minerality that has become a hallmark of Bergström Wines.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable precision. Layers of black raspberry, red cherry, cranberry and red beet unfold seamlessly across the palate, supported by subtle spice, earthy complexity and a finely woven mineral backbone. The 2019 vintage combines generous fruit concentration with remarkable freshness, while the estate’s biodynamic viticulture contributes exceptional purity and transparency. The magnum format allows the wine to mature at a slower pace, preserving its youthful energy while gradually revealing greater complexity over time. The finish is exceptionally long, refined and persistent, carrying lingering notes of red berries, dried herbs, ironstone and savoury spice. The style is elegant yet structured, capturing the very best of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Bergström recommends enjoying it now through 2030+, with the magnum format comfortably extending that window.

Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the finest value collector’s Pinot Noirs from Oregon and an outstanding alternative to top village Burgundy. Compared to Bergström’s single-vineyard wines such as Silice or Shea Vineyard, the Cumberland Reserve is more immediately approachable, offering a beautifully complete snapshot of the estate’s style while still possessing impressive depth and ageing potential. The 2019 vintage is one of the strongest in recent years, and in 1500ml magnum it will continue to evolve gracefully for many years beyond the standard bottle. Drink from now with 1–2 hours of decanting or cellar confidently through to 2040 and beyond. Perfect with duck breast, roast quail, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, venison, truffle-infused dishes or refined Pacific Northwest cuisine.
