PICPOUL

Picpoul (often called Picpoul Blanc) is a crisp, zesty white grape variety best known for producing refreshing, seafood-friendly wines. Its name translates roughly to “lip-stinger,” a reference to its naturally high acidity, which gives the wine its vibrant, mouthwatering character. This bright acidity is one of the defining traits that makes Picpoul so appealing, especially in warm climates.

The grape is most closely associated with southern France, particularly the appellation Picpoul de Pinet in the broader Languedoc region. Located along the Mediterranean coast, this area benefits from abundant sunshine tempered by cooling sea breezes, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining their signature freshness. As a result, Picpoul thrives in these conditions and expresses a distinctive coastal influence.

In the glass, Picpoul wines are typically light-bodied and lively, offering bright flavors of lemon, lime, grapefruit, green apple, and pear, often accompanied by delicate floral notes. A subtle saline or mineral edge is common, reflecting the vineyard’s proximity to the sea. Most examples are made in a clean, unoaked style that emphasizes purity, freshness, and immediate drinkability, making them best enjoyed young.

Picpoul has earned a reputation as an exceptional food wine, particularly with seafood. Often referred to as the “oyster wine,” it pairs beautifully with fresh oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, and light Mediterranean dishes. For wine lovers, it offers a refreshing and affordable alternative to varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc or Albariño, delivering similar brightness and versatility with its own distinctive coastal charm.
