The 2023 Byrne Farm 'Glenidle Vineyard' Pinot Noir is a striking inaugural single-vineyard release from Byrne Farm’s high-altitude Nashdale vineyard in Orange, NSW. Planted at approximately 900–950 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, the vineyard combines multiple Pinot Noir clones — including Abel, 115, 114, 667 and 777 — to create a wine that balances perfume, structure and depth. Crafted by Jeff Byrne with a gentle, site-driven approach, it reflects both the cool climate and the exceptional freshness of the 2023 season. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, revealing dark cherry, wild raspberry and red plum alongside lilac, alpine herbs and subtle whole-bunch spice. There are savoury notes of licorice root, Campari and earthy perfume, with oak sitting firmly in the background to allow the fruit and site expression to shine.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky, fine-grained tannins and bright natural acidity that gives the wine energy and precision. The fruit profile is vibrant and crunchy, centred on raspberry, cherry and plum, supported by spice, mineral tension and a lightly savoury edge. The structure is refined yet powerful, leading to a long, persistent and mineral-driven finish that highlights both purity and drive - hallmarks of Orange Pinot Noir grown at altitude.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the most exciting new-wave Australian Pinot Noir releases - combining the freshness and tension of high-altitude Orange fruit with a distinctly Burgundian sense of structure and savoury detail. Compared to softer, more fruit-forward Pinot styles, it offers greater energy, minerality and ageing potential while still remaining beautifully approachable. The inaugural 2023 release already shows impressive depth and precision, making it a serious Pinot for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Enjoy now with a light decant or cellar through 2033+ as it develops further complexity. Perfect with duck, quail, mushroom dishes or chargrilled pork.
