The 2022 Egon Müller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett is a beautifully refined Riesling Kabinett from the Braune Kupp vineyard in Wiltingen in Germany's Saar, produced under Egon Müller's historic Le Gallais estate. Braune Kupp offers a fascinating contrast to Müller's legendary Scharzhofberg: it lies closer to the Saar River and receives greater warmth from both the river's moderating influence and reflected sunlight. Its slate soils nevertheless retain the unmistakable mineral character of the Saar, producing Riesling with slightly riper fruit and greater generosity while preserving the region's famous freshness and delicacy.
The 2022 opens with fresh apple, lemon and Mirabelle plum, developing orange zest, apricot, yellow peach and subtle wild berry alongside green herbs, smoke and salty slate minerality. The palate is light-bodied and beautifully juicy, with delicate residual sweetness balanced by vibrant Saar acidity, giving the wine an almost off-dry impression despite its Kabinett classification. There is slightly more richness through the mid-palate than in the most austere Saar vintages, but the finish remains racy, mineral and remarkably refreshing. Stuart Pigott awarded 93 Points for James Suckling, Anne Krebiehl MW awarded 92 Points for Vinous, and Mosel Fine Wines awarded 91 Points, with Mosel Fine Wines highlighting the combination of richness, zestiness and juicy freshness.
