ESCARPMENT

Escarpment Winery is a highly regarded boutique producer from Martinborough, one of New Zealand’s most prestigious Pinot Noir regions. Founded in 1999 by winemaker Larry McKenna, often referred to as the “Prince of Pinot,” the winery is situated on Te Muna Road, an area known for its free-draining alluvial gravel soils and ideal cool-climate conditions. The name “Escarpment” reflects the steep slopes and dramatic landscape of the region, as well as the winery’s philosophy of crafting wines that express the individuality of each vineyard site.

Escarpment has built its reputation primarily on Pinot Noir, producing wines that are elegant, structured, and strongly influenced by a Burgundian approach to winemaking. Rather than focusing solely on grape variety, the winery emphasizes terroir, releasing a range of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs such as Kupe, Te Rehua, Kiwa, and Pahi. Among these, the Kupe Pinot Noir stands out as the flagship wine, known for its concentration, complexity, and aging potential. Across the range, the wines typically display vibrant red fruit characters like cherry and raspberry, layered with floral, earthy, and mineral nuances, supported by fine tannins and bright acidity.

In addition to Pinot Noir, Escarpment also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, all crafted in a restrained and textural style. These wines tend to favor balance and precision over overt fruitiness, aligning more closely with Old World sensibilities than the more expressive styles often associated with New Zealand. The unique terroir of Martinborough—characterized by its cool climate, long growing season, and gravelly soils—allows for slow ripening, resulting in wines with concentration, finesse, and a distinctive mineral edge.

Today, Escarpment is widely recognized as one of New Zealand’s leading Pinot Noir producers, often mentioned alongside top Martinborough estates. Its wines consistently receive critical acclaim and are particularly valued by enthusiasts seeking a refined, site-driven expression of New Zealand Pinot Noir that bridges the gap between New World purity and Old World elegance.
