CHATEAU TRONQUOY-LALANDE

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a historic Bordeaux wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation on the Left Bank of France’s Médoc region, known for producing consistently good quality, classic Bordeaux reds. The origins of the estate date back to the 18th century, when François Tronquoy established one of Saint-Estèphe’s early vineyards and built the elegant château around which the vineyards grew. Its name comes from the Tronquoy family and the la lande (meaning heath) on which the property was planted.

For much of its history the estate changed hands several times, and in 2006 it was purchased by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, the French businessmen who already owned the nearby Second Growth Château Montrose. Instead of absorbing the property into Montrose, the Bouygues brothers invested heavily in modernising and revitalising Tronquoy-Lalande, including renovating the cellar, building new facilities and improving vineyard management. This renaissance helped elevate the estate’s reputation within Saint-Estèphe.

The estate comprises about 30 hectares of vineyards planted predominantly to the classic Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The terroir is typical of the Médoc, with gravel and clay soils that provide drainage and structure to the wines. After harvesting, grapes are vinified and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for around a year, contributing to its complexity and ageing potential.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande’s flagship wine is a Saint-Estèphe red, celebrated for its balance of ripe fruit, fine tannins and classic Bordeaux character, with aromas and flavours of blackcurrant, spices, tobacco and cedar. Recent vintages have shown both approachable youth and excellent long-term cellaring potential, often delivering medium- to full-bodied structure with depth and persistence.

In summary, Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a Bordeaux estate with deep historical roots and a modern identity shaped by focused investment and careful winemaking. Its wines embody the power, elegance and ageing capability expected from Saint-Estèphe, making them compelling both for current drinking and future cellaring.
