CHATEAU PRIEURE LICHINE
Château Prieuré-Lichine is a distinguished Fourth Growth (4ème Grand Cru Classé) estate located in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. With a long and storied history dating back to the 12th century, the property was originally managed by Benedictine monks from the Priory of Cantenac, who cultivated vines on the estate. Over the centuries, it evolved into one of Margaux’s most emblematic châteaux, renowned for wines that embody the appellation’s hallmark elegance and finesse.
The modern identity of Château Prieuré-Lichine was shaped largely by Alexis Lichine, a charismatic and visionary figure often called “the Pope of Wine.” Lichine purchased the property in 1951 and dedicated decades to replanting vineyards, improving viticulture, and reestablishing its reputation among Bordeaux’s elite. His deep understanding of both European and American markets helped to elevate the château’s global prestige.
Today, the estate covers around 80 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The gravel-rich soils of Margaux provide perfect drainage and encourage deep root systems, producing wines of depth, balance, and aromatic complexity.
Under the ownership of the Ballande Group and with continued investment in modern winemaking technology, Château Prieuré-Lichine consistently produces wines that are supple, perfumed, and refined. Typical vintages reveal silky tannins, floral and cassis aromas, and a harmonious structure that reflects both the estate’s grand heritage and the timeless charm of Margaux.
