CHATEAU GRUAUD LAROSE
Château Gruaud Larose is a prestigious Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) estate from the 1855 Classification of Saint-Julien, celebrated for its noble structure, depth, and longevity. Established in the early 18th century, the château has long been a cornerstone of the Médoc’s left bank, embodying the classic power and elegance of Saint-Julien.
The estate spans roughly 82 hectares, planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Its deep gravel soils produce wines of remarkable concentration and complexity, expressing both density and finesse.
Château Gruaud Larose has passed through several notable ownerships, including the Cordier family, Alcatel-Alsthom, and since 1997, the Merlaut family, who also own Château Haut-Bages Libéral. Under their stewardship, viticulture has been elevated with a strong emphasis on organic and biodynamic practices, and meticulous parcel management.
In style, Gruaud Larose is known for its rich, full-bodied character, delivering layers of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, tobacco, and earthy spice, supported by firm tannins and exceptional balance. These wines are built to age, often revealing their full complexity after a decade or more, and are regarded as some of the most consistent and soulful expressions of Saint-Julien.
