The 2022 Kenzie Duet is a beautifully fresh and inventive Hawke’s Bay red blend that brings together the elegance of Pinot Noir with the savoury spice and depth of Syrah. Produced by Dave Mackintosh under his small Kenzie label, the wine blends 80% Pinot Noir from the Mangatahi vineyard with 20% Syrah from the organically farmed Bridge Pā vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels. The Pinot Noir was fermented entirely with whole bunches and gentle foot stomping, while the Syrah was lightly destemmed with partial whole bunch inclusion before both parcels were matured briefly in old barriques with minimal intervention and no fining or filtration.
The nose reveals blueberry, boysenberry and dark cherry layered alongside black pepper, lavender, rosemary and subtle whole-bunch smokiness, giving the wine impressive aromatic lift and complexity. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, fine tannins and remarkable freshness. Layers of black plum, spice and savoury herbal nuance unfold with beautiful energy and finesse, finishing dry, poised and wonderfully drinkable with a distinctly cool-climate feel. The combination of Pinot Noir’s elegance and Syrah’s depth gives the wine a unique “light and shade” personality that remains balanced and highly food-friendly.
