The 2023 Domaine Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is one of the domaine’s most prestigious and sought-after wines, representing the depth, elegance and extraordinary ageing potential of one of Burgundy’s greatest Grand Cru vineyards. Domaine Faiveley has been the largest landowner in Chambertin-Clos de Bèze since the 1930s, with three parcels including Vieilles Vignes, Clos de Bèze Haut and Grands Rangs. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir, from vines planted as early as 1949, with the limestone-rich soils and privileged position of Clos de Bèze providing remarkable complexity and structure. The 2023 vintage combines generosity and ripe fruit with the freshness and precision necessary for long-term ageing.
The nose is beautifully expressive and layered, revealing aromas of ripe red cherry, blackberry, wild strawberry and dark plum, intertwined with rose petal, violet and fresh peony. As the wine opens, more complex notes of wood smoke, anise, clove, sandalwood and subtle earthy spice emerge, with a delicate mineral character adding further definition. There is an impressive combination of ripe fruit and floral elegance, while the savoury and lightly smoky nuances hint at the extraordinary complexity this wine will develop with further bottle age.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, powerful yet remarkably elegant, with layers of blackberry, dark cherry and plum supported by vibrant acidity and beautifully refined tannins. The texture is dense and fleshy, but never heavy, with the sweet, concentrated fruit balanced by a fine mineral backbone and subtle savoury spice. Notes of liquorice, anise, graphite and gentle oak develop through the mid-palate, while the tannins provide impressive structure without sacrificing the wine’s finesse. The finish is exceptionally long, precise and persistent, leaving lingering flavours of dark berries, rose petal, spice and mineral freshness. The combination of power and silkiness is particularly impressive in this young Grand Cru.
