The 2022 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Ducs Monopole is the flagship wine of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville and one of the most prestigious Premier Cru Pinot Noirs in Volnay, Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. Clos des Ducs is a true 2.15-hectare monopole, entirely owned by the domaine, and its boundaries remain essentially identical to the 52 ouvrées recorded in an official document from the early 16th century. Historically part of the vineyards belonging to the Dukes of Burgundy, the clos entered the d'Angerville family in 1804. The steep, perfectly south-east-facing vineyard sits on poor, stony and strongly calcareous soils with deep white marl and excellent natural drainage. The domaine itself simply describes Clos des Ducs as its grand vin - a wine of exceptional structure, distinction and longevity that typically requires at least a decade to reach its full expression.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an exceptional choice for serious Burgundy collectors and lovers of world-class Pinot Noir. Compared to many Premier Cru Burgundies, Clos des Ducs offers Grand Cru-level complexity, structure and ageing potential while retaining the unmistakable perfume and elegance that define Volnay. The outstanding 2022 vintage provides a wonderful balance of concentration and accessibility, but this is ultimately a wine built for patience. While already captivating with extended decanting, its true complexity will emerge over decades. Perfect with roast pigeon, duck breast, veal, wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes or the finest French cuisine.
