TURKEY FLAT
Turkey Flat Vineyards is a historic, family-owned winery located on the edge of Tanunda in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. With a rich heritage dating back to 1847, it stands as one of Australia’s most respected wine estates, celebrated for its old-vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Rhône varietals, as well as its commitment to sustainable viticulture.
The name “Turkey Flat” originates from early Prussian settlers who observed large native birds—Plains Bustards, often mistaken for turkeys—frequenting the fertile flats near Tanunda Creek . In 1847, Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted Shiraz vines on this land, establishing what are now among the oldest Shiraz vines in Australia . The Schulz family acquired the property in the 1860s and have been its custodians ever since. Under the leadership of Christie Schulz, the fourth generation, the winery has evolved into a modern estate while preserving its deep historical roots.
Turkey Flat is renowned for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that reflect the unique character of the Barossa Valley. The winery employs sustainable practices, including the use of permanent cover crops to enhance soil health, reduce erosion, and minimize carbon footprint. These efforts reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship and the long-term vitality of their vineyards.
