2025 Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris
- Description
- Info
The 2025 Quealy Musk Creek Pinot Gris is one of the most powerful and distinctive Pinot Gris expressions from Mornington Peninsula, sourced from Quealy’s high-altitude Musk Creek vineyard in Main Ridge. Planted in 1997 on basalt-derived volcanic soils and perched around 200 metres above sea level, the site’s cool maritime influence allows for exceptionally long ripening, producing tiny pink berries with remarkable acidity, concentration and aromatic complexity. Crafted in a richly textural, Alsatian-inspired style, the wine undergoes a long, gentle press cycle before fermentation in a mix of stainless steel and French oak puncheons, building depth while preserving freshness. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, revealing ripe pear, red apple skin and melon alongside wild honey, ginger spice and citrus blossom. There are deeper savoury and mineral notes of oyster shell, wet stone and almond meal, with subtle oak influence adding complexity and warmth without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully rich, mouth-filling texture balanced by vibrant natural acidity. Flavours of pear, papaya, pink grapefruit and stone fruit are supported by creamy lees texture, spice and fine phenolic grip. Compared to lighter Pinot Grigio styles, the Musk Creek offers far greater concentration, savoury detail and mineral depth, yet it remains poised and energetic. The finish is long, dry and persistent, carrying lingering notes of honey, spice and saline minerality.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the benchmark Australian Pinot Gris wines — rich, textural and deeply site-expressive while still retaining freshness and precision. Compared to the racier Quealy Pinot Grigio wines, Musk Creek leans far more toward an Alsatian-inspired style, offering more body, spice and ageing potential. The 2025 vintage is especially complete and expressive, with excellent balance between richness and mineral tension. It’s a serious white wine that remains incredibly food-friendly. Best enjoyed slightly chilled rather than ice cold, and ideally with some air in the glass. Drink now or cellar through 2034+ as it develops further honeyed and nutty complexity. Perfect with roast pork, lobster, mushroom dishes, creamy poultry recipes or washed-rind cheeses.
