The Champagne Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature NV (Base 2023) is a precise and mineral-driven Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from the family’s best parcels on the south-facing slopes of Épernay, with additional fruit from Premier Cru sites in Vertus and Voipreux. The old Chardonnay vines and chalk-rich soils give the wine impressive purity and energy, showing lemon, green apple and white peach alongside white flowers, citrus zest, chalk and subtle saline notes. The Base 2023 is blended with 50% reserve wines from previous vintages, adding depth and balance.
On the palate, it is finely textured and vibrant, with lively acidity, delicate bubbles and layers of citrus, orchard fruit and subtle stone fruit. Lemon and green apple are complemented by white peach, white flowers and gentle brioche and lees notes, while the chalk-rich soils bring a pronounced stony and saline character. Fermentation in small foudres and barrels, partial malolactic conversion and ageing on fine lees add breadth and texture without masking the wine’s mineral freshness. With zero dosage, the finish is exceptionally dry, focused and mouth-watering, with lingering citrus, chalk, saline and fine mineral notes.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Champagne drinkers who enjoy precise, dry Blanc de Blancs with freshness, mineral detail and subtle savoury complexity. The Base 2023 release is approachable now but has enough acidity and structure to develop additional brioche, nutty and mineral character with bottle age. Best enjoyed over the next 5–8 years. Serve chilled with oysters, scallop crudo, seared scallops, grilled prawns with lemon, sashimi, goat’s cheese gougères, or aged Comté.
