2023 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey Premier Cru Clos Des Myglands Monopole
- Description
- Info
The 2023 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey Premier Cru Clos des Myglands Monopole is one of the benchmark wines of the Côte Chalonnaise and a flagship monopole of Domaine Faiveley. Owned exclusively by the Faiveley family since the 1930s, Clos des Myglands is one of Mercurey’s most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards, producing Pinot Noir with exceptional depth, structure and ageing potential. The name is believed to derive from the English phrase "My Land," reflecting the vineyard’s historical ownership. The outstanding 2023 vintage has produced a wine of remarkable fruit purity, balance and elegance, while retaining the power and generosity for which this monopole is renowned.
The nose is expressive and beautifully layered, revealing aromas of black cherry, raspberry and ripe plum alongside subtle smoky oak, sweet spice and delicate floral notes. As the wine opens, hints of cedar, forest floor and crushed stone emerge, complemented by touches of black tea and gentle earthy complexity. The aromatic profile is vibrant and refined, balancing generous dark fruit with the subtle woody and smoky nuances that are characteristic of Clos des Myglands.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant natural acidity and impressive concentration. Layers of cherry, raspberry and dark berry fruits unfold across the palate, supported by savoury spice, earthy complexity and a finely defined mineral backbone. The warmth of the 2023 vintage provides generous fruit and excellent mid-palate depth, while the vineyard’s limestone-rich soils preserve freshness and precision. The tannins are velvety and beautifully integrated, leading to a long, smooth and persistent finish marked by lingering notes of dark fruits, spice, smoke and crushed stone. The style is powerful yet harmonious, delivering the richness expected from Mercurey while maintaining excellent balance and finesse. Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator awarded the 2023 vintage 92 points, noting its silky texture, fine balance and ageing potential through 2040.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of Burgundy’s outstanding value Premier Cru Pinot Noirs and an excellent introduction to the quality of Mercurey. Compared to many Côte de Nuits Premier Crus, Clos des Myglands offers remarkable depth, structure and complexity at a considerably more accessible price. Compared to Faiveley’s Clos Rochette Blanc, this red expresses the fuller, darker-fruited side of Mercurey, while still retaining the elegance and precision that define the estate’s wines. The exceptional 2023 vintage combines generous fruit with refined tannins, making it approachable in its youth while possessing the structure to age beautifully. Drink from 2026 onwards or cellar confidently through to 2040. Perfect with roast duck, grilled lamb, beef tenderloin, mushroom risotto, game birds, charcuterie or classic Burgundian cuisine.
