The 2010 Château Suduiraut Sauternes is a superb mature example of one of the appellation’s most prestigious estates. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, Château Suduiraut is located in Preignac in the heart of Sauternes, with vineyards on gravelly and sandy-clay soils. The estate is particularly renowned for producing wines that combine intense botrytis concentration with remarkable freshness and precision.
The 2010 vintage is especially attractive because it produced wines with excellent acidity alongside concentrated, noble-rot-affected fruit. The blend is predominantly Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc, giving Suduiraut its characteristic combination of richness, viscosity and aromatic lift.
The bouquet is wonderfully complex and mature, opening with aromas of apricot, peach, candied citrus and ripe pineapple, followed by honey, saffron and orange blossom. With air, tertiary notes of beeswax, caramel, toasted almond, ginger and marmalade emerge, together with the characteristic botrytis aromas of dried flowers and subtle mushroom.
On the palate, it is rich, luscious and beautifully balanced, with layers of apricot, orange marmalade, candied lemon, tropical fruit and honey. Despite its sweetness and concentration, the wine has impressive acidity that keeps the palate energetic rather than heavy. Notes of vanilla, saffron, ginger and toasted nuts add complexity, while the texture is wonderfully silky and almost creamy.
The finish is long, persistent and beautifully saline, with honeyed citrus, apricot, spice and mineral freshness lingering well after the wine has been swallowed. After more than a decade in bottle, the 2010 is beginning to show the complex tertiary character that makes mature Sauternes so compelling, but it still has considerable longevity ahead.
