BRANCAIA
Brancaia is a renowned Tuscan wine estate located in the heart of the Chianti Classico. The winery was founded in 1981 by Swiss couple Bruno Widmer and Brigitte Widmer, who purchased a neglected hillside property near Castellina in Chianti and gradually transformed it into a highly respected wine estate. What began as a small project soon gained international recognition, particularly after the estate’s wines achieved remarkable success in early Chianti Classico tastings during the 1980s.
Over time, Brancaia expanded its holdings to include vineyards in Radda in Chianti in 1989 and later in the coastal region of Maremma in 1998. Today the estate manages around 80 hectares of vineyards across these three Tuscan locations. The vineyards are planted mainly on stony limestone and clay soils at elevations between roughly 230 and 400 metres, conditions that help produce wines with concentration, structure, and aromatic complexity.
The winery is now run by the founders’ daughter Barbara Widmer, who studied oenology and took over winemaking and vineyard management in the 1990s. Under her leadership, Brancaia has become known for producing elegant and modern Tuscan wines that combine the character of traditional Italian grape varieties with precise, contemporary winemaking. Sustainability is a key part of the estate philosophy, and since 2019 all Brancaia wines have been certified organic.
Brancaia produces a range of wines from both Chianti Classico and the Tuscan coast. The flagship wine, Il Blu, is a celebrated Super Tuscan blend based mainly on Merlot with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other notable wines include the estate’s Chianti Classico, the approachable TRE Toscana IGT, the Maremma-based Ilatraia, and No.2 Maremma. Across the portfolio, Brancaia wines are widely admired for their purity of fruit, balance, and refined structure, expressing both the elegance of Tuscany and the precision of the estate’s meticulous vineyard work.
