BOWEN
Bowen Estate is a small, family-owned winery located on the famed terra rossa soils of Coonawarra in South Australia — one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate regions known especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate was established in 1972 by Doug and Joy Bowen, who converted the property from a dairy farm into vineyards; today, daughter Emma Bowen leads winemaking while Doug focuses on viticulture, continuing a tradition of hand-pruned vines and meticulous care in both vineyard and winery.
Bowen Estate produces a select trio of wines — Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon — all reflecting the classic character of Coonawarra fruit. The wines are traditionally made to showcase varietal purity, balanced structure, and the hallmark flavours of their terroir, with Cabernet and Shiraz ageing in oak and showing ripe fruit complemented by fine tannins and depth. These wines are often noted for their generosity of flavour, softness of tannins, and longevity, with critics recognising the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz as quintessential expressions of the region’s style.
The vineyard now spans around 33–34 hectares, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz with a smaller parcel of Chardonnay, and continues to be managed sustainably with attention to yield control and quality. The cellar door, housed in the property’s original dairy buildings, offers a rustic and welcoming tasting experience, allowing visitors to sample current releases and learn about the winery’s history and philosophy.
Bowen Estate’s wines are distributed both domestically and internationally, and because of their consistent quality and classic style, they remain highly regarded examples of Coonawarra’s signature varietals — particularly Cabernet Sauvignon — prized by collectors and wine lovers alike.
