The 2020 A. Christmann Ölberg-Hart Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a profound dry Riesling from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Ölberg-Hart in Königsbach, Pfalz, and historically an especially significant vintage for this vineyard. Ölberg-Hart is the finest core section of the broader Ölberg vineyard, situated high on the edge of the Pfälzerwald at around 178–197 metres elevation with an east-southeast exposure. The soils are dominated by heavy tertiary limestone marl known as Terra Fusca, mixed with red sandstone rubble, giving the wines remarkable density and mineral structure. Christmann owns only around 0.8 hectares here, with vines planted in 1986. Most importantly, 2020 was the first vintage in which Christmann produced Ölberg-Hart GG from the entire parcel; previously, the oldest section had been reserved for the estate's rare auction wine, "Kapelle."
The grapes were selectively hand-harvested in September 2020, followed by spontaneous fermentation and maturation in large traditional wooden casks. Peach, apricot, mirabelle plum and citrus are joined by grapefruit, herbs, smoke, graphite and flint, while the palate becomes increasingly stony, saline and almost iodine-like. This is a Riesling built around texture and structure rather than simple aromatic fruit. James Suckling awarded 95 Points, describing its combination of silky texture and unusually substantial fine tannins, while Stephan Reinhardt for Wine Advocate awarded 94 Points, praising its purity, tension, salinity and very long youthful finish and giving a drinking window of 2026–2050. Mosel Fine Wines rated it 92 Points.
