The 2012 Pitois Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Brut Nature is a distinctive 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagne from the Côte des Blancs, combining vintage depth with the precision associated with this celebrated village. Christophe Pitois comes from a family with generations of winegrowing history in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and developed his expertise making wines for other Champagne houses before releasing his own cuvées. The 2012 brings together fruit from several Grand Cru parcels, with stainless-steel vinification preserving clarity and freshness. Its Brut Nature finish, with no dosage added, places particular emphasis on the Chardonnay’s fruit, texture and chalky character.
Expect citrus, lemon peel and chalky mineral notes, with extended maturation adding the potential for brioche, toasted almond and more savoury complexity. Danish merchant Vintage Only records 12 years of lees ageing before disgorgement for its release of this cuvée, an unusually patient approach that helps explain its appeal. The same merchant describes a wine that remains strikingly fresh, with expressive citrus and marine character. The attraction here is the combination of mature Champagne texture and a dry, focused finish, although the precise balance of freshness and development will depend on the bottle’s disgorgement date and subsequent storage.
Ben’s Recommendation:
What makes this bottle particularly interesting is the opportunity to explore 2012 Grand Cru Chardonnay with extended cellar maturation and a zero-dosage finish. Fourteen years since harvest does not necessarily mean a fully mature Champagne, especially when much of that time has been spent on its lees. I would enjoy a well-stored example now through approximately 2032, using the disgorgement date and bottle condition to guide any longer cellaring. Allow it to unfold in a generous tulip or white Burgundy glass. It would be excellent with lobster, scallops, turbot, roast chicken or mushroom dishes. For someone who enjoys the texture and savoury detail of mature white Burgundy alongside Champagne’s freshness, this is a compelling bottle to explore.
