The 2024 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a rare, intensely concentrated Mosel Riesling made from carefully selected, botrytis-affected fruit. This limited-production Goldkapsel release shows ripe peach, passionfruit and lychee, layered with candied citrus, floral honey and dried flowers, all underpinned by the vineyard’s distinctive slate minerality.
On the palate, it is rich and succulent yet remarkably weightless, with precise acidity and persistent saline minerality balancing the concentrated sweetness. Despite its power, finesse remains the defining feature. The wine received 97 points from Vinous and James Suckling, with Vinous praising its purity and precision.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an exceptional collector’s Riesling with the concentration and structure to evolve for decades. While approachable young, it should become even more complex with bottle age, with drinking windows extending to around 2065–2070. Pair with spicy Asian cuisine, roast pork, pâté, mature cheeses, fruit-based desserts or crème caramel.
