The 2024 Carousal Sangiovese is a vibrant red from Victoria’s Alpine Valleys, made by Patrick Sullivan from Sangiovese grown at Whorouly South near Myrtleford. The vineyard is planted on well-drained gravel and red loam soils, with Sangiovese grafted in 2009 using Mat 6 and Mat 7 clones. The nose shows red cherry, maraschino and raspberry alongside dried Mediterranean herbs, red spice and ginger.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and savoury with juicy red fruit, lively acidity and classic dusty tannins. The selectively harvested fruit is fermented as whole berries in a large open fermenter for around four weeks before pressing to older barriques for a short period of maturation, preserving freshness while adding gentle texture and complexity.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is an excellent choice for Sangiovese drinkers who enjoy bright, savoury reds with juicy fruit, fresh acidity and fine, dusty tannins. Ideal with tomato-based pasta, pizza, grilled pork, roast lamb, charcuterie or mushroom dishes.
