The 2022 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Rouge is one of France’s most sought-after cult wines and a benchmark for the Languedoc. Produced in Aniane from a blend led by Syrah and Mourvèdre, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise, the wine continues the legacy established by the late Laurent Vaillé, whose wines transformed the reputation of southern French fine wine.
The warm 2022 vintage delivers remarkable concentration while maintaining freshness and balance. Aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry are layered with garrigue, liquorice, black olive, graphite and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is powerful yet refined, combining dense dark fruit, silky tannins and a distinctive limestone-driven mineral backbone. Extended ageing in oak adds complexity without masking the purity of the fruit or the character of the terroir.
Despite its richness, the wine remains impressively precise and energetic. Notes of spice, olive tapenade, truffle and wild herbs emerge with air, while the finish is exceptionally long, savoury and structured. Critics and merchants consistently describe the 2022 as a wine of both power and elegance, built for long-term cellaring.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, Grange des Pères remains one of the most important and collectible wines in France outside the traditional elite regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhône. Compared to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it is more structured and mineral-driven; compared to Domaine Trévallon, it offers greater polish and density while retaining a distinctly Mediterranean personality. The 2022 vintage combines the generosity of a warm year with the freshness and precision that define great Grange des Pères. This is a serious collector’s wine with the capacity to evolve beautifully for decades. Drink from 2028 onwards or cellar comfortably for 20–30+ years. Perfect with lamb, venison, game dishes, slow-braised beef and mature hard cheeses.
