The 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a traditionally styled Tuscan Sangiovese sourced from the estate’s old Vigna Vecchia Mercatale vineyard in northern Montalcino. The site’s clay-rich, mineral soils and northern exposure favour structure and freshness, while the 2016 vintage delivered excellent phenolic ripeness. Expect red cherry and wild berries with violet, dried herbs, balsamic notes and earthy mineral complexity.
On the palate, it is concentrated and firmly structured, with vibrant acidity, layered red fruit and persistent, finely shaped tannins. Savoury herbs, tobacco and mineral notes add depth, while the natural freshness of the vintage keeps the wine focused through a long finish. The Riserva fruit was harvested on 28 September 2016 from Vigna Vecchia Mercatale.
