The 2021 Blank Canvas Escaroth Vineyard Pinot Noir is a compelling single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Taylor Pass subregion of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys. Grown on a rare dry-farmed, north-facing clay slope, the vineyard is one of the most distinctive Pinot Noir sites in Marlborough. Crafted by Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, the wine was made with a high proportion of whole bunches and matured in French oak, resulting in a Pinot Noir that emphasises structure, savoury complexity and site expression over simple fruit-driven charm.
The nose reveals peony, violet, red cherry and pomegranate layered with earthy spice, dried herbs and subtle smoky notes. The palate is concentrated yet finely balanced, combining vibrant red fruit with savoury complexity, fresh acidity and fine, needle-point tannins. Rebecca Gibb MW described it as fragrant, juicy and elegant, while Cameron Douglas MS awarded it 95 points and Bob Campbell MW praised its length and cellaring potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A serious Marlborough Pinot Noir that offers a more structured, Burgundian interpretation of the variety. Perfumed, savoury and beautifully age-worthy, it pairs wonderfully with duck, roast quail, pork loin, mushroom dishes and game birds. While already impressive with a decant, it will continue to evolve gracefully through 2033–2036 and beyond.
