The 2020 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Champs Canet is an elegant 100% Chardonnay from Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, combining floral finesse with concentrated fruit and a chalky mineral backbone. The Carillon family’s winemaking roots in Puligny date back to 1520, and Jacques continues that heritage through a small collection of estate vineyards. His Champs Canet comes from a 0.55-hectare holding, with vines described in contemporary assessments as more than 40 years old. The domaine’s élevage comprises 12 months in oak barrels with approximately 20% new oak, followed by six months in stainless steel, developing texture while preserving the vineyard’s delicate aromatics and freshness.
The 2020 offers pear, apple, white peach, lemon blossom and orange zest, complemented by subtle hazelnut, freshly baked bread and gentle oak spice. There is considerable depth beneath its floral character, with bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. Jasper Morris MW awarded it 93 Points, highlighting its engaging floral bouquet, lively palate and carefully judged oak. John Gilman also awarded 93 Points in bottle, praising its concentrated core, mineral definition and beautifully balanced finish. Allen Meadows awarded 92 Points, noting its texture, persistence and youthful restraint. Together, these assessments suggest a substantial Premier Cru with both aromatic charm and the structure for further development.
