The 2019 Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is one of the estate’s most profound and limited wines, produced only in exceptional vintages from the finest Sangiovese parcels surrounding the historic castle in north-west Montalcino. Founded by artist Sandro Chia, Castello Romitorio has established itself among Tuscany’s elite producers, crafting Brunello that combines classical structure with remarkable elegance and precision. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest of the past decade, delivering wines of extraordinary balance, freshness and longevity.
The nose is captivatingly complex, revealing wild cherry, blood orange and ripe raspberry layered with rose petal, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, ironstone and exotic spice. The palate is powerful yet impeccably refined, with concentrated red fruit framed by finely sculpted tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of liquorice, crushed stone, cedar and savoury earth emerge with time in the glass, leading to an exceptionally long and mineral-driven finish. James Suckling awarded the wine 100 points, while Wine Advocate rated it 98+ points, praising its purity, energy and remarkable ageing potential. The wine possesses both the concentration of a great Riserva and the finesse that has become the hallmark of Castello Romitorio.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A truly world-class Brunello and one of the finest Italian wines of the vintage. Profound, layered and built for long-term cellaring, it pairs beautifully with bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef, venison, wild boar ragù, truffle dishes and aged Pecorino. While breathtaking with extended decanting today, patience will be richly rewarded. Drink from 2028 onwards, with peak enjoyment likely between 2032 and 2055+.
