The 2019 Hans Herzog Grande Duchesse Sauvignon Blanc is the estate’s flagship expression of Sauvignon Blanc and a striking departure from the classic Marlborough style. Produced in tiny quantities from low-yielding, organically farmed vines, the wine is inspired by the great white wines of Bordeaux and the Loire rather than the overtly aromatic style for which the region is famous. Meticulous vineyard management, barrel fermentation and extended lees ageing create a wine of remarkable depth, texture and complexity.
The nose reveals grapefruit, white peach and citrus blossom alongside notes of flint, fresh herbs, toasted hazelnut and subtle oak spice. The palate is rich and beautifully layered, combining vibrant citrus and stone fruit with creamy texture and a powerful mineral backbone. Hints of lemon curd, wet stone and delicate smoky nuances add complexity, while the finish is long, precise and exceptionally elegant. The 2019 vintage showcases both concentration and freshness, resulting in a Sauvignon Blanc of outstanding sophistication and ageing potential.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A world-class Sauvignon Blanc that challenges expectations and rivals the finest examples from Europe. Complex, textured and highly age-worthy, it pairs beautifully with lobster, scallops, grilled fish, roast chicken and goat’s cheese. Enjoy now with a brief decant, or cellar through 2035–2040 as it develops greater richness, savoury complexity and mineral depth.
