The 2019 Château Chasse-Spleen is a benchmark wine from Moulis-en-Médoc and one of the Médoc’s most consistently overperforming estates. Situated on the famed gravelly soils of Grand Poujeaux, Château Chasse-Spleen has long been regarded as a property capable of producing wines at the level of many classified growths. The 2019 vintage is a classic Left Bank blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, benefiting from an outstanding Bordeaux growing season that delivered both concentration and freshness.
The nose is deeply aromatic, revealing cassis, blackberry and black plum layered with cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle notes of liquorice and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, the palate combines a rich core of dark fruit with lively acidity and refined, powdery tannins that are characteristic of great Moulis. James Suckling awarded the wine 92–93 points, praising its polish and finesse, while critics have highlighted its balance, purity and long ageing potential. The finish is long, savoury and classically Médocain, with notes of pencil lead, cedar and dark berries lingering impressively.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb example of modern classic Bordeaux and one of the smartest buys from the Médoc. Structured, elegant and beautifully balanced, it pairs wonderfully with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck, venison and aged hard cheeses. Decant for at least an hour if drinking now. While already showing impressive harmony, this wine is built for the cellar and should continue to evolve beautifully through 2040–2045.
