The 2019 Carmes de Rieussec is the second wine of Château Rieussec, one of Sauternes’ most prestigious Premier Cru Classé estates. Produced from younger vines and selected parcels within the estate, it offers the hallmark richness and complexity of Rieussec in a more approachable and earlier-drinking style. The exceptional 2019 vintage provided ideal conditions for noble rot, resulting in wines with outstanding concentration, freshness and aromatic intensity. Presented in a 375ml half-bottle, it is perfectly sized for sharing alongside dessert or cheese.
The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing apricot, pineapple and candied orange peel alongside notes of acacia honey, marmalade and vanilla spice. Rich and luscious on the palate, it balances layers of tropical fruit and honeyed sweetness with vibrant acidity, preventing the wine from ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, silky and beautifully refreshing, showcasing the balance and elegance that define great Sauternes.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A superb introduction to Sauternes and one of Bordeaux’s great sweet wine values. Decadent yet beautifully balanced, it pairs wonderfully with foie gras, blue cheese, tarte tatin, crème brûlée, poached stone fruits and citrus-based desserts. Drinking beautifully now, but it has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully through 2035–2040.
