The 2019 Arnaud Lambert “Clos Moleton” is one of the flagship Cabernet Franc wines of Saumur-Champigny, sourced from a tiny vineyard in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg planted on a thin layer of clay over limestone. Produced by biodynamic pioneer Arnaud Lambert, the wine comes from 40-year-old vines and is matured for up to 20 months in barrel, creating a more profound and age-worthy expression than the domaine’s village-level bottlings.
The outstanding 2019 vintage delivered exceptional ripeness while retaining freshness and balance. The nose is complex and expressive, showing black cherry, raspberry and red plum alongside violet, rosemary, olive tapenade, wet stone and subtle spice. The clay soils contribute richness and texture, while the limestone bedrock provides precision, minerality and structure.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet intensely concentrated, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable energy. Layers of black cherry, raspberry and savoury herbs are framed by finely textured chalky tannins and a long mineral finish. Rebecca Gibb MW awarded the wine 95 points, noting its balance, finesse and significant ageing potential, while Berry Bros. & Rudd described it as rich, concentrated and seamlessly integrated.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the finest Cabernet Franc wines in the Loire Valley and a fantastic alternative to more expensive Right Bank Bordeaux. Compared to Chinon, it offers greater depth and polish; compared to Saint-Émilion, it is fresher, more mineral and more terroir-driven. The 2019 vintage is particularly impressive for its combination of concentration, elegance and structure. While already captivating with decanting, this is a serious cellar wine that will continue to evolve beautifully over the next two decades. Drink from 2025 onwards or cellar for 15–20+ years. Perfect with roast lamb, duck, venison, game dishes or mushroom-based cuisine.
