The 2011 Château Climens is a stunning Barsac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered sweet wine estates. Classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Classification and often referred to as the “Lord of Barsac,” Château Climens is unique for its 100% Sémillon plantings on the appellation’s distinctive limestone and red clay soils. Under the stewardship of Bérénice Lurton, the estate has become synonymous with purity, finesse and longevity. The exceptional 2015 vintage provided ideal conditions for the development of noble rot, producing a wine of remarkable richness balanced by extraordinary freshness.
The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing apricot, pineapple and candied orange peel layered with acacia honey, saffron, ginger and white flowers. The palate is rich and concentrated, yet remarkably precise, with vibrant acidity carrying flavours of quince, marmalade, tropical fruit and honey across a long, crystalline finish. Notes of beeswax, spice and crushed limestone emerge with time in the glass, adding further complexity. James Suckling awarded the wine 99 points, while Wine Advocate scored it 98 points, praising its purity, energy and extraordinary balance. Despite its opulence, the wine remains effortlessly elegant and poised.
Ben’s Recommendation:
A world-class Barsac that perfectly captures the beauty of Château Climens. Luxurious, layered and exceptionally refined, it pairs beautifully with foie gras, Roquefort, blue cheeses, tarte tatin, crème brûlée and stone-fruit desserts. Equally captivating on its own, this is a wine built for the cellar and should continue to evolve magnificently through 2050 and beyond. Drinking beautifully now, but the best is still yet to come.
