The 2005 Château Climens Barsac is a magnificent expression from one of Bordeaux’s most revered sweet wine estates. Classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Classification and often referred to as the “Lord of Barsac,” Château Climens is unique for being planted entirely to Sémillon on the chalky limestone soils of Barsac. Under the stewardship of Bérénice Lurton, the estate has become renowned for producing wines of extraordinary purity, elegance and longevity. The outstanding 2005 vintage delivered ideal conditions for noble rot, resulting in a wine of exceptional richness balanced by remarkable freshness.

The nose is intensely complex, revealing apricot, peach and orange marmalade layered with acacia honey, saffron, candied citrus peel and exotic spice. Rich and concentrated on the palate, it combines luscious stone fruit and honeyed sweetness with the vibrant acidity that is the hallmark of great Climens. Notes of mandarin, quince, caramel and botrytis spice unfold through an extraordinarily long, precise finish. Wine critics praised the vintage for its richness and perfume, while mature bottle reviews consistently highlight its balance, complexity and ability to continue evolving for decades.

Ben’s Recommendation:
One of the great sweet wines of Bordeaux and a superb example of why Château Climens is considered among the finest producers in Barsac. Luxurious yet beautifully poised, it pairs magnificently with foie gras, Roquefort, blue cheeses, tarte tatin, crème brûlée and stone-fruit desserts. Equally compelling on its own as a contemplative wine, it is drinking beautifully today but has the structure and freshness to continue evolving through 2045–2055 and beyond.
