The 2022 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet Grand Cru is one of the rarest and most coveted white wines in Burgundy, produced from a tiny holding within the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard - widely regarded as the greatest site for Chardonnay in the world. Domaine Blain-Gagnard, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, produces fewer than two barrels annually from this extraordinary parcel, making it one of the estate’s most exclusive wines. The 2022 vintage delivered greater generosity and concentration than the frost-affected 2021 vintage, while retaining the balance and mineral precision that define the finest white Burgundies. Burghound awarded the wine 95 points, describing it as the most complex and restrained nose in the range, with aromas of pear essence, white peach, exotic Asian tea and crushed fennel.
On the palate, the wine is extraordinarily textured and layered. Rich orchard fruit, citrus oil and mineral notes unfold across a framework of vibrant acidity and immense dry extract. Despite its power, the wine remains poised and precise, with a firm acid spine providing remarkable freshness and length. The finish is exceptionally persistent, carrying waves of stone fruit, crushed limestone and subtle spice for minutes. Burghound notes that while currently less overtly powerful than the domaine's Bâtard-Montrachet, a classic Montrachet often gains additional breadth, weight and complexity with age.
