The 2021 Domaine Jacques Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet is an elegant 100% Chardonnay from Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, offering floral character, inviting texture and a refreshing mineral finish. The Carillon family’s winemaking roots in the region date back to 1520, although Jacques is principally associated with neighbouring Puligny-Montrachet. His Chassagne comes from a single 0.27-hectare parcel planted with Chardonnay in 2013, previously used to produce red wine. The domaine’s élevage comprises 12 months in oak barrels with approximately 15% new oak, followed by six months in stainless steel, developing texture while keeping the fruit and vineyard character clearly expressed.
The 2021 reflects a less sunny growing season, with freshness and energy playing an important role in its balance. Expect white flowers and fresh orchard fruit, supported by gentle oak influence and a mouth-watering mineral finish. In his vintage-specific tasting, Bill Nanson of Burgundy Report highlighted its broad floral bouquet, vibrant palate and growing flavour intensity, noting a particularly clear mineral character at the end. The importer’s contemporary assessment described an open, generous texture with enough depth for medium-term ageing. Together, these observations suggest an approachable village Chassagne that combines a welcoming palate with the refreshing definition of the vintage.
