The 2021 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet Grand Cru is an exceptionally rare 100% Chardonnay from Le Montrachet in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, representing the highest expression of Domaine Blain-Gagnard’s white wines. Founded in 1980 by Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard, the domaine draws on the historic vineyard heritage of the Gagnard-Delagrange family. Its Montrachet holding comprises just 13 rows covering approximately 0.08 hectares, inherited from Claudine’s father, Jacques Gagnard, in 1999. This tiny parcel normally produces only one or two barrels annually, although production differed in 2021. Allen Meadows of Burghound awarded this vintage 96 Points and his "Don’t Miss" distinction, identifying it as one of the outstanding wines of the year.
The 2021 reveals white flowers, citrus, green apple, spice and exotic tea, with an initially reserved aromatic profile that reflects its youthful structure. The palate is broad and remarkably generous, combining substantial richness with precise balance. Its lemon-driven, tightly structured and austere finish provides a striking contrast to the opulence of the fruit, carrying the flavours with exceptional persistence. Burghound’s assessment highlights a classic Montrachet built for extended ageing: a wine whose depth and concentration are matched by the discipline of its finish. This is a particularly compelling expression for collectors who appreciate richness supported by tension and structure.
