The 2005 Château Musar “Museum Release” is a mature release of one of Lebanon’s most iconic and distinctive wines, produced from vineyards in the Bekaa Valley at around 1,000 metres elevation. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, aged extensively before release in the traditional Musar style.
The 2005 vintage is widely regarded as a classic Musar year, showing the estate’s signature combination of Mediterranean warmth, savoury complexity and tertiary development. Critics and collectors often describe it as beautifully evolved yet still remarkably fresh, with strong ageing capability remaining.
The nose is deeply expressive and mature, showing black cherry, plum and wild strawberry layered with cedar, leather, dried herbs, tobacco, spice and earthy complexity. Characteristic Musar notes of balsamic lift, game and volatile savouriness add further intrigue and individuality.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity supporting evolved dark fruit, spice and savoury earthy notes. The texture is seamless and mature, with a long, layered and highly distinctive finish. Like many great Musar vintages, the wine continues to evolve dramatically with air in the glass.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, Château Musar is one of the most unique fine wines we offer — and the 2005 Museum Release perfectly captures why the estate has such a cult following. Compared to Bordeaux, it’s more savoury, earthy and emotionally expressive; compared to Rhône wines, it carries more volatility and wild complexity. This is not a “clean” modern wine — it’s about personality, evolution and individuality. The Museum Release format makes it especially attractive for collectors because the wine has been perfectly cellared at the winery before release. Best enjoyed with extended decanting. Drink now or over the next 15–20+ years. Perfect with lamb, Middle Eastern cuisine, game or slow-cooked dishes.
