The 2019 Protero Capo Nebbiolo is Stephen Pannell’s flagship Nebbiolo from the Protero vineyard in Gumeracha, Adelaide Hills. Produced from a small selection of Nebbiolo planted in 1999, this wine showcases the variety’s distinctive combination of perfume, structure and longevity. The nose is complex and captivating, revealing aromas of cherry, cranberry and blood orange layered with rose petal, black tea, fennel, liquorice and savoury spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied with remarkable intensity and finely detailed tannins. Flavours of sour cherry, red currant and cranberry are complemented by notes of dried herbs, leather, orange peel and subtle vanilla spice. Extended skin contact and maturation in large old oak contribute texture and depth, while bright natural acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic. The finish is exceptionally long and structured, with layers of fruit, savoury complexity and fine-grained tannins unfolding gradually.
