La Gritona Reposado is a subtle and distinctive 100% blue agave tequila distilled by a local family in the small region of Valle de Guadalupe in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Made from mature agave cultivated at the height of its sugar production, it is baked within 24 hours of being cut, spends 24 hours in earthen ovens, and is rested for 24 hours before crushing. It is naturally fermented, twice distilled, and rested in reused American whiskey barrels for 8 months. Bottles are hand blown with recycled glass in Guadalajara.
For a Reposado, La Gritona is light on colour and sweetness—Coronado and Cárdenas want none of the flavours that mask many commercial Reposados like vanilla, chocolate and dulce de leche. Instead this is packed with delicious, honest and savoury, roasted agave flavor, reminiscent of the old-style 'rested' tequila, before the mass market took hold: "It’s tequila like our grandparents drank," says Cárdenas.
