- Info
The 2022 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges is one of the flagship wines of both the domaine and the entire appellation. Les Saint-Georges is widely regarded as the greatest Premier Cru vineyard in Nuits-Saint-Georges and has long been considered worthy of Grand Cru status due to its exceptional terroir, complexity and ageing potential. Domaine Henri Gouges is one of Burgundy’s most historic estates, deeply linked to the creation of the modern AOC system and synonymous with traditional, long-lived Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The 2022 vintage delivered ripe yet balanced fruit, producing wines that combine concentration with remarkable freshness and refinement. Critics have praised this release for its purity, complexity and structure. Neal Martin described a bouquet of red and black fruits, crushed flowers and spice that grows in the glass, while noting its silky tannins and exceptional purity. Burghound highlighted the wine’s layered red and dark Pinot fruit, violet, herbal tea and mineral depth, describing it as powerful yet less austere than many traditional Nuits-Saint-Georges examples.
The nose is intensely expressive and layered, showing black cherry, raspberry and dark berry fruit alongside violet, rose petal, exotic spice and subtle earthiness. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with remarkable depth and structure. Fine-grained tannins frame concentrated red and black fruit, while limestone-driven minerality and vibrant acidity provide lift and precision. Despite its power, the wine remains elegant and composed, finishing long with notes of spice, crushed stone, white pepper and savoury complexity. The hallmark of Les Saint-Georges is its ability to combine muscular structure with refinement, and the 2022 vintage captures this beautifully.
Ben’s Recommendation:
At Wine More Cellars, this is one of the great collector-level wines of Burgundy and arguably the benchmark expression of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Compared to Vosne-Romanée, it is more structured, earthy and powerful; compared to Gevrey-Chambertin, it often shows greater mineral intensity and firmness. Les Saint-Georges has long been viewed as a "Grand Cru in all but name," and in the hands of Domaine Henri Gouges it represents one of Burgundy’s most authentic and age-worthy expressions of Pinot Noir. The 2022 vintage is especially exciting because it combines the concentration and generosity of a warm year with freshness, finesse and outstanding balance. This is a serious cellar wine that will reward patience. Drink from 2030 onwards or with extended decanting now, and cellar comfortably for 20–30+ years. Perfect with duck, game birds, truffle dishes or refined French cuisine.
